S2 Modern Studies
In the BGE stage pupils are begin to explore a variety of issues. In S2 we look at Rich World, Poor world and Conflict. In Rich World, Poor World we explore why there are rich and poor countries in the world and what life is like for those in developing countries. We cover issues such as child labour, disease and famine. We also look at how poverty impacts the lives of people closer to home. We look at what leads people to live in poverty in Scotland and how it impacts their lives.
S3 Superpowers
The new S3 Superpowers course focuses on the five main superpowers in the world today - Russia, China, France, the USA and UK. Pupils explore the issues facing these countries and the relationships between these countries and others in the world.
Pupils also cover topics such as nuclear weapons. We look at how these influence which country is powerful in the world and how they can make or break relationships between countries. We look at the effects of Nuclear Weapons on the world and how they can lead to other issues such as conflict.
We then look at international organisations and how these influence the superpowers in the world. We study the United Nations, European Union and NATO. We explore how these organisations work to maintain peace and deal with potential threats to safety.
