S1 French

Pupils receive 3 periods a week of French in S1. The emphasis is on skills development and listening, talking, reading and writing activities are built in to the following units: Town; Home; and Christmas. Pupils will also begin to develop their knowledge and understanding of French culture by completing the "Ma Vie de Courgette" film study. Some simple grammar structures are also introduced in S1.

Outwith the classroom, pupils can enjoy an excursion to the Edinburgh Christmas Market to put the Christmas unit in to a real life context.

S2 French

Pupils receive 3 periods a week of French in S2. Pupils will continue to work through specific units: Leisure; Media; and Food. Pupils will also complete another film study on "Les Choristes" to encourage greater cultural understanding. More complicated grammar structures will be introduced throughout the S2 units.

Outwith the classroom, pupils can enjoy an excursion to a French restaurant in order to sample some of the delicacies they have studied in the Food Unit! Pupils will also begin to make connections to the world of work by continuing with our Business Champions Scheme that is established with Glen Turner Distillery Ltd. Pupils may be invited to participate in a site visit.

S3 French

Pupils receive 2 periods a week of French in S3. The S3 course builds upon the foundations established in previous years and aims to prepare pupils thoroughly for the Senior Phase. As in S1 and S2, the S3 course combines a unit-based approach with a structured study of grammar. The units studied in S3 are: School; Employability; Holidays.

Once again, there are opportunities for pupils to learn outwith the classroom. Pupils have the option to sign up to an excursion abroad; normally this excursion is to Paris. Pupils will continue to develop their understanding of the importance of languages in the world of work. Some will have the opportunity to attend a Business Brunch and speakers will be invited in to address S3.

Assessment in the BGE

All pupils will have the opportunity to take part in both formative and summative assessments throughout their learning journey. Assessments will be used to make judgements on pupils' progress in the four skills: listening, talking, reading and writing.
